Governors Island is a very popular attraction, residing roughly 800 yards from the southern Manhattan tip. It stands at 172 acres, once served the US military between 1776-1966, and currently repurposed as a public green space. Prior to European colonization, the island was called Paggank by the native Lepane (translated to Nut Island), the area once had a rich collection of hardwood trees, such as Oaks, Chestnuts, and Hickorys that served as a foraging and hunting grounds for Lepane people.
