Inwood Hill Park, also called the Shorakapkok Preserve, contains the largest remaining old growth forest in Manhattan! Much of its pre colonial history remains intact, from the plants itself to the rocks, streams and glacial topography. Prior to the 18th century, the Wecquaesgeek, a Munsee-speaking band of Wappinger people, inhabited the area. Artifacts and remains of their life and culture still can be found in the park. It was then turned into farmland during European colonization, the last farm ceasing production at the end of the 19th century.
